Most sessions follow a simple rhythm: a talk introducing the technique, a guided meditation, and time for questions and reports about your experience.

Over the eight sessions we'll explore five techniques. Each is a modern slice of the world's meditation traditions, made accessible, practical, and secular. Flexible enough to work with what you already care about. You'll find out how to apply concentration, sensory clarity, and equanimity to your daily life.

James Schanz, mindfulness coach

Ten years of practice. Newly trained as a coach.

My name is James Schanz. I'm a newly trained Unified Mindfulness coach. This is the first class I'm teaching since completing my UM Pathways coaching training. Although my certification is new, I've had a personal mindfulness practice for more than a decade. I'm active in a local meditation group through InsightLA and have been to a silent retreat. Mindfulness is important to me because I started my journey as someone who was anxious and depressed, and I feel I have slowly discovered how to enjoy life.

I want to be a supportive influence whatever your personal mindfulness goals may be. I'm honored to be offering this class, and I see it as a way to deepen my own practice while getting to share the techniques that have been so influential in my own life. Anyone can learn mindfulness and find ways to take back their attention.

A poem I wrote.

Lunar Light

Rivers of lunar light

indirectly solar

bathe in the downpour

lost in the shadows

look up when it's night

lunar bounty

spills over into the dark below

swim in the wavelengths only dreamt about

safely wandering the shadowy places

shadows only play in your embrace

animating parts backlit by inner light

shadow work on the walls of houses and homes

parts only play when there is shadow and light

they both need a home

oh how I wish I felt complete

I don't wish to compete

with my parts — they all come from lunar light

I adore the rivers, cool and crisp

I bathe in lunar light

so I might invite

the shadows home

I made a place for them

and call them my own

precious parts

who call me in the night

I always answer in the lunar light.
